2 x 2 >4

Maybe not in the world of mathematics, but in the world of living gratefully, 2 x 2 > 4.

It’s a simple exercise or practice that can multiply our sense of appreciation.

Two things I am grateful for today and two reasons why for each:

  1. Cooler air

    a. The heat and humidity were tiring, the cool air is energizing.

    b. Cooler air heralds the arrival of my favorite season—fall.

  2. Acceptance

    a. It allows me to put my energy where it is most useful rather than spinning in frustration or fear.

    b. It reminds me of the useful phrase “accept more, expect less,” which calls forth self-compassion and more reasonable expectations for myself in the hours ahead.

Now I have a list of six gratitudes. And by giving more details to both cooler air and acceptance, I have deepened the gratefulness flowing in my head, heart, body, and soul. That’s effective and generous multiplication.

Try your own variation on this equation and see what shows up. Onward!
