A Simple Question
What wonders in the natural world can I see right now?
This is today’s “Daily Question” in the Practice Space on A Network for Grateful Living’s website.
I don’t often look at this daily question. Rather, I consider the “Word for the Day” that shows up in my email each morning. In an effort to mix it up, try new things, not get stuck in a rut, I am venturing out to ponder this daily question.
Similar to my most recent post, it only takes a few minutes and the benefits are far-reaching. This is an easy one as I sit on our front patio on a nice, cool morning, minus the oppressive humidity of recent days. It feels wonderful. But what do I see from my vantage point right now?
*pine, maple, and crabapple trees
*blooming roses and clematis among other flowers which I am far less confident naming
*shrubbery near our house that grows like crazy this time of the year and changes my view
*orange and pink sky though the trees, just now giving way to the orange orb of the rising sun
*birds making their way across the expansive blue sky, maybe gulls, based on size and flight elevation
*the orange glow of the sun has now given way to a milder yellow tone
*a tiny ant navigating our concrete driveway
I don’t see the usual squirrels and birds foraging this morning. Maybe they moved to the backyard, or got an earlier start. I miss them. But there was no lack of wonders, even from my limited perch. How wonderful, to simply sit and look. With eyes that can see, in a quiet neighborhood, with ample natural wonders still to be found even with our human houses, roads, telephone lines, and more.
How wonderful to sit and look. To notice and appreciate. A simple question brings connection and compassion. Not a bad way to start the day.
