By Design
On our travels last week, I was struck by both of these designs. Wind-blown sand on the shores of Lake Michigan, and a portion of the outside wall of the hotel we were staying at. One pattern created by Nature, the other by humans, with plenty of help from Nature.
I marvel at the artistry created by a stiff breeze coming off the water and waves. I wonder how old these grains of sand are. Where did a rock first start weathering and eroding to form tiny grains of sand? Perhaps it was centuries ago, or millenniums, or longer.
It was a brisk and beautiful morning on the lakefront. I felt part of the landscape and also humbled by it.
The bricks also have sand in them. What other resources helped create the bricks? Machines and human hands and natural resources like clay. One brick at a time, a wall was created and a building took shape. A sturdy structure that many humans find relaxation and rest in each day.
It was that kind of trip. Taking time to notice the little things. Being fully present to where I was and who I was with. Not every moment of every day, but each moment I did pause was a true blessing. And in those moments I found deeper love of life, more meaningful inspiration, good energy, and humble grace.
Humans, by design, can let our minds take over our hearts and souls. Nature and creativity, also by design, simply ask us to pay attention. When we do, these words by Katie Rubinstein really hit home:
Life, what an exquisite privilege.
