Seek and Find
We find what we look for. If I go into my day frustrated or worried, more of the same tends to grow in my thoughts and how I perceive the day’s happenings. If I begin from a place of quiet gratefulness, more of each builds, or at least keeps the negative thought loop from grabbing on and taking over.
Simple and effective, but not always easy. Especially when we are glutted with disheartening news on one hand and promises of quick fixes to our personal struggles on the other. Stop looking there. Start looking here. Right here, right now.
Discipline and regular practices strengthen new pathways in my brain. Exposure therapy of a different kind. My brain finds new energy and outlets. I was looking for joy in recent days, and started making a list. Writing it down helps me commit to it.
Here are some of the places I found joy:
-the smell of lilacs and the flow of endorphins on a run along our local trails
-sitting on our deck in the early morning coolness and enjoying my first sips of coffee
-watching the sun rising and the hopeful anticipation of a new day
-taking healthy risks and trusting myself in new writing endeavors
-the feel of my new running shoes when I put them on
-fun sidewalk chalk art created by others for me to enjoy
-hugs with loved ones
-the ease and comfort of marriage and daily routines
-my hand on my heart, feeling the warmth within
-a cold carbonated drink on a hot day
-text messages that connect me to friends and family
-walking through old neighborhoods physically as well as emotionally
-our puppy Gracie and how she reminds my husband and I not to take ourselves too seriously
-the smooth texture and taste of yogurt, and a special spoon to enjoy it with
Seek and you will find. Pay attention with an open mind and heart. What will you be looking for today?
