These three numbers could be a student’s locker combination. I have become pretty adept at helping middle schoolers get the hang of the lock and combos—many for the first time. If they are stuck, I may show them how to do the combination, or get it open for them to allay the anxiety that may be building, but I always ask them to practice it for me (and for them).
To the right first as you go to the first number. Switch directions and be sure to pass your first number before going to your second number. Then switch directions again and go directly to your third number. (Interesting how the terms clockwise and counterclockwise don’t land with children of the digital clock age.)
On Monday of this week, I began my 25th year at my current school, serving as Middle School Counselor. It was also the beginning of my 37th year in education. The first ten I was a high school Social Studies teacher and coach in three schools in Iowa, the next two I was an elementary counselor in two schools in Sioux Falls, SD. When we made our way to Minnesota in 2000, this job was the one I almost didn’t apply for because it was part-time. It has long since become full-time.

Ample experience, opportunities, trials and tribulations, and professional and personal growth have added up over these decades. There have been hundreds and thousands of students. Some I will never forget. There have been hundreds of colleagues with whom I have worked side by side, laughed and commiserated with. All of us marveling at the youth emerging into young adults right before our eyes. “You can’t make this stuff up” has applied to many situations I have witnessed and been fully immersed in.
I also marvel at the passage of time. How can it be 25 and 37 years? One moment at a time. One day at a time. One month at a time. One semester at a time. One year at a time.
This year finds me full of hope and good energy. I welcome the return of school routine. I love fall, so the start of school also means my favorite season is near. The years I have spent in education have brought me to a more humble and grace-filled approach to my profession and to my interactions with students, parents, and colleagues. Onward!
