Adding Texture

The texture of the leaves on this tiny plant, just a few inches wide, captured my gaze as I sat on a bench nearby. The texture soothed my eyes and my mind. I didn’t need to reach down and touch the leaves. That little plant sure didn’t need my intrusion that morning. It was busy enough just being itself. I was busy enough being an attentive and curious human guest.

Fascinating. The lines, grooves, design and overall shape of each leaf unique and also intertwined. Look closely at anything and details emerge. The lines and grooves on my hands. The pattern of the upholstered chair I am sitting in. The surface of the coffee in my cup, reflecting the ceiling. True presence and a fixed gaze immerse me in this moment. I feel part of, not apart from. It is beautiful and calming. Compassion for it all arrives naturally.

Each moment I choose to live gratefully adds texture to the hours of my day, adds texture to the profound meaning of being alive. Go ahead, add some texture today.
