Beaming Smiles, Taking Vows

My son Sam and his wife Halle just got married on October 16, 2026. Five years to the day since they met. I marvel at how fast those five years went. And that the baby I gave birth to almost 25 years ago is a fully-grown man. Time is a marvel and a gift. I treasure the memories of falling sleeping in the recliner with baby Sam asleep on my chest after breastfeeding. The bittersweet passage of years. Grateful for it all.

Sam is now a husband. Halle is now a wife. There is a new level of responsibility and commitment in that. As my husband Darcy and I told them on their wedding day, we see a true partnership between them, and that’s a great thing to head into a marriage with. Congratulations and best wishes for your future together Mr. and Mrs. Valentine!

Of the many wonderful pictures from that day, this is one of my favorites, right after the ceremony. They are just beaming. Genuine smiles. True love. It warms this mom’s heart to see their happiness, to know my son has found a life partner and that they under-stand and support each other in the ways that matter most.

Keep smiling at each other, at yourselves in the mirror, and at the life you are building together. Bring the laughter, find the gratitude. Even on the days when life isn’t going the way you wish it would. Maybe especially find a reason to smile on those days. Sound advice for newlyweds and for all of us.

Their wedding day was a celebration of them and their commitment to one another. Vows taken, a meal shared, speeches, their first dance, cake and cookies, conversations. More dancing. A beautiful venue. Stunning floral arrangements. Suits and dresses. There is just something extra special about getting all dressed up for a special occasion.

Vows taken. Taking vows are a key part of a wedding, and more importantly of the marriage “from this day forward.” What about the personal vows we make to ourselves? They are less formal, usually far less public, but still worth their own celebration.

We can each ask ourselves: What are the best vows I have made and kept for myself? Are there some vows I need to renew?

The vow to grow in my recovery from alcoholism is one I take daily. So is the vow to live gratefully; finding grace in the wonder and awe of being alive. Even when my mind is messy and my heart is aching. These are the kinds of vows that only stay fresh if I renew them regularly, and with action.

How about you? What needs renewal in your life? Recommit to a helpful and healthy action. Add a beaming smile to seal the deal. Onward!
