“Start. That’s all.”

I have been doing open mic performances at a local brewery monthly for many months now. It stretches me, pushes me to write new content, reshape and revise previous writings, practice, add performative tones and layers. I have found it exhilarating and inspiring and can I just add that I am proud of myself for expanding my horizons and honing my craft?

I am grateful for these opportunities, the people who make them possible, and those who listen.

The other night, one piece I did was a brief little ditty about resolutions. Here is a sampling of some of the lines I composed and delivered:

A resolution on resolutions:

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, lots of people have lots to say. For some it’s just “Not gonna bother with that, no way.” For others, it’s “Sure I’ll start fresh, why not start today?” For others still, a list and an accountability partner. They are ready to roll. OK!”

Some shrug and wonder why they have to change just because the calendar did?

Others shrug and admit “Tried that, didn’t work. See ya!”

Still others get ahead of themselves and start thinking about February or this summer– silly things like that! Just stay in today! If you have any chance at all of being resolute with your resolutions, one must stay in today. It’s the only way!

If you find yourself continuing to procrastinate, to delay, to say “maybe I’ll start tomorrow,” – bring the big picture into view. Think of it as a puzzle and start with just one piece at a time. Start today! One piece. That’s all.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Don’t put all your cards on the table. Diversify your goals.

It’s not about a new year, it’s about a new day.

It’s not about a new you. It’s about starting with the current you, the wonderful you of today.

We are each a work in progress. Where do you hope to make more progress? Start there.

That’s all.

Now there’s a resolution I can handle–”Start. That’s all.

Start. That’s all. Start the day quietly and gratefully. Start a walk or run with a single step. Start a pot of coffee. Read the next chapter. Write the next line. You get the idea. Just start. Have a good day!
